| Details | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Days 1-8 | Nairobi/Kenya/Tanzania | Leave the thriving capital of Kenya behind for the Masai Mara, nestled in the Great Rift Valley. Adapt to the animals' schedule, venturing out on game drives early in the morning and late in the afternoon to beat the midday heat. Then cross into Tanzania and get a glimpse into the life of the Masai on a guided walk through a local village. It's also possible to get wrapped up by some African wildlife at the informative Snake Park or chill out in a lively bush bar. Then it's onto the wide open plains of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to try and spot the Big Five and more. In the Serengeti, sleep in an unfenced area where hyenas roam for an unforgettable experience. | | Days 9-14 | Zanzibar/Mikumi National Park | Travel in the shadow of Mt Kilimanjaro to the coastal city of Dar es Salaam. Climb aboard a ferry bound for Zanzibar, once a hub for the lucrative spice, ivory and slave trade. The past prosperity of the island is evident in the architecture of Stone Town, where huge, brass-studded wooden doors adorn graceful Arabesque buildings. A visit would be incomplete without a spice tour so make sure to join one to see, touch and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and more. Later there's time to kick back on a dazzling white beach, snorkel and dive beneath the shimmering surface of the Indian Ocean. Returning to the mainland, take a spin through Mikumi National Park, where tree-climbing lions and forest elephants can sometimes be seen. | | Days 15-24 | Lake Malawi/Zambia/Livingstone | Travel south to Lake Malawi and set up camp along its sandy shores. Covering much of the small country, the expansive waters provide a livelihood for many locals. Rise early to watch fishermen in bwatos (dugout canoes made from hollowed out tree trunks) cast out their nets at daybreak. Then enjoy the range of optional water sports on offer, hike the lakeside forests or make friends with easygoing Malawians. In Zambia, cross the mighty Luangwa River before pushing on to Livingstone, near the impressive natural wonder of Victoria Falls. A visit to see the thundering waters is a must. It's also possible to take a relaxing cruise down the Zambezi to watch an African sunset with a cool beer in hand. For a dramatic finale to an awesome adventure why not try abseiling or even dangle over a ravine on a gorge swing? |
