Itinerary
DayDestinationDescription
Days 1-8Livingstone/Zambia/MalawiThe thunder of nearby Victoria Falls forms the soundtrack for the first part of this exciting adventure. From Livingstone there is ample time to visit the mighty falls, where getting soaked from the spray is all part of the experience. On the banks of the Zambezi, the options are many, including taking a cruise along the upper reaches of the river to catch sight of hippos and buffaloes. Take a visit to the falls and also to a Zambian village to meet the locals. Moving onwards to Lake Malawi, enjoy a few days on the peaceful beaches meeting locals, exploring the lakeside forests or even learning how to dive.
Days 9-14Dar es Salaam/ZanzibarTake the tarred road through the Mikumi National Park en route to Dar es Salaam. With luck, you'll spot wild elephants or even lions snoozing in the shade along the way. Hunt for souvenirs in the sprawling curio markets of Dar es Salaam, perhaps picking up a wood carving or two as a souvenir before camping out on the balmy beach just outside of town. Taking a ferry to the evocative Spice Island of Zanzibar. Wander the warren of winding streets in Stone Town, packed with grand Arab-style mansions and oriental markets, or tour the inland spice plantations that made this island so famous. Swim in the sultry waters of the Indian Ocean to discover the treasure trove beneath the surface.
Days 15-21Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro Crater/NairobiBack on the mainland travel across the open plains that define the East African landscape. At Arusha stock up on supplies before setting up camp on the ancient lands of the Masai. A visit to a traditional village is an opportunity to meet these elegant, friendly tribespeople and afterwards, get up close to some of the deadliest reptiles on earth at the Snake Park. Enjoy Tanzanian hospitality and meet travellers from all over the world at a lively bush bar. The expansive horizons of the Serengeti are the next stop, and a great place to catch Africa's most famous predators on the prowl. Camp in an unfenced campsite where hyenas and lions roam at night - a true African safari experience. The Ngorongoro Crater is another haven for the Big Five and more. Return to Arusha and travel across the Masai Steppe to Kenya.
