Itinerary
DayDestinationDescription
Day 1Puerto Maldonado/Amazon LodgeGear up for the journey ahead in Puerto Maldonado, then travel by bus and motorised canoe into the dense forest of the Amazon. Watch out for the colourful birds in this lush region. Arrive at the lodge in time for a briefing on the accommodation and ecotourism project, where staff are all local and eager to impart their knowledge of the jungle. Climb up to the canopy tower to get an amazing aerial view of the Amazon.
Days 2-3Research CentreHead out on an early morning birdwatching walk before journeying by canoe to the Research Centre where, in the evening, there is a chance to learn about the vital Macaw Project and the habits of the birds themselves. On day 3, take another early morning walk to the clay-lick to see these fascinating birds up close - the macaws, and other parrots, congregate here daily to ingest clay before disappearing back into the thick forest. Later, take a gentle hike through the floodplain trail with a local guide to see the strange trees and exotic flowers of the Amazon.
Day 4Amazon LodgeReturn to the Lodge and hike to the Condenado Oxbow Lake for a chance to spot more of the wildlife in this fertile jungle - monkeys and peccaries are commonly sighted. Opportunities exist in the evening to attend lectures or chat about conservation in the Reserve.
Day 5Puerto MaldonadoA final canoe ride is a chance to bid the Amazon goodbye before returning to Puerto Maldonado, where there may be a little time to explore before transferring to the airport and on to your next destination.
